Barcelona has reached a preliminary agreement with Girona for the loan of first team goalkeeper and club captain Marc André ter Stegen until the end of the current 2025/2026 season, in a rare intra Catalan transfer between the two clubs.

The agreement follows the German international’s personal approval, with all formal procedures and final signatures expected to be completed in the coming days.

The move comes as ter Stegen (33) seeks regular first-team minutes after losing his undisputed starting position at Barcelona, where young goalkeeper Juan García has established himself as the preferred option in recent months.

To facilitate the transfer, the player has agreed to a significant adjustment to his contractual terms, with Barcelona covering the vast majority of his salary (approximately 90%), in a step aimed at easing the club’s financial burden while allowing the goalkeeper to remain competitive ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

For Girona, securing a world-class goalkeeper of ter Stegen’s caliber represents a major reinforcement, and he is expected to take the number one spot immediately upon the deal’s completion.
