New Chapter for Malen: Dutch Forward Joins Roma from Aston Villa

Dutch international Donyell Malen has completed a move to AS Roma from Aston Villa during the January transfer window, marking a fresh chapter in his professional career. Roma confirmed the acquisition on an initial loan deal that includes an option to make the transfer permanent at the end of the season.

Aston Villa also announced Malen’s departure, without disclosing financial details of the agreement. However, several reports suggest that the permanent purchase clause could reach around €25 million.

Malen, 26, joined Aston Villa in January 2025 after a stint with Borussia Dortmund. Despite showing flashes of quality, he struggled to secure a consistent starting role under Unai Emery, which opened the door for a mid-season switch in search of more playing time.

Roma’s decision to sign Malen is viewed as a strategic attempt to strengthen their attacking line for the second half of the campaign, especially with the club competing in both domestic and European competitions. On the other hand, Villa may look to reinvest or adjust their squad depth during the final days of the window.

For Malen, the move represents an opportunity to reboot his form and regain the level he displayed with Dortmund and the Dutch national team. Supporters in Rome will be eager to see how he adapts to Serie A and whether he can add a new dimension to the Giallorossi’s frontline.
